The media is funny...

Now that we know who the VP nominee is going be (I'll perhaps comment more on this later)...this segment from Countdown last night is even funnier.  I love it when the media gets carried away.

Nice article about Kinsler and Young...

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com wrote a very nice article a few days ago about the relationship between Ian Kinsler and Michael Young. No wonder they are such a good double play combo.
Ian Kinsler and Michael Young share a baseball value system amid the double-play pivots in Texas. They believe in the sanctity of hustle, the importance of accountability to teammates and the need for major leaguers to take the field even when nagging injuries might put a crimp in performance.

But there's room for friends to disagree, and Kinsler and Young part ways on the subject of country music. Kinsler, an Arizona native, has tried to sell his teammate on the merits of artists Pat Green, Reckless Kelly and Cross Canadian Ragweed. Young, a California guy, is resistant, no matter how toe-tapping the stuff might be.

"There are some catchy little songs, but I don't know who sings them," Young said. "One time I said, 'Who's this?' and I think it was Garth Brooks, and Kins had a dirty look on his face. It was like, 'How can you not know that?'" While the background music changes in Arlington, the story is forever the same.

The 2008 Rangers lead the majors in runs and slugging percentage, but they're loitering around .500 because of a pitching staff that ranks last in the big leagues with a 5.45 ERA. Sound familiar?

A Must Watch...

If you haven't seen the web series from Joss Whedon, you are missing out. Called Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, this three part show is seriously cool and funny...even a little heart-breaking. And hey...how bad can something be if it starts Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother). You can download this from iTunes (which I did), but it is available on Hulu as one large episode...also check out the website.

Olympics Fever...

Being thoroughly engrossed in sports is nothing new for me (as people who really know me can attest), but really there is nothing quite like the experience of the Olympics.  I guess it is the fact that it only occurs every four years and that everyone is there representing their country.  (I have said this before and will say this again...I am a sap for community activites or events especially those that bring people together that normally wouldn't associate with one another)  Also there is something magical about the stories of these athletes working their whole lives or much of their lives towards the goal of winning gold.  Many have overcome such extreme circumstances just to make it to the Olympics which makes you all the more willing to become entralled in the events.

Apart from the athletics, the Olympics has always been an avenue for addressing issues affecting the whole world and often times is a chance to mend fences or at least have a few weeks of peace.  Well along these lines...on one of the many podcasts that I listen to on a weekly basis....Its Only a Game...Bill Littlefield presented this Olympics themed poem that I think covers a lot of the hopes, wishes, and dreams that could be solved through an event such as the Olympics one day if we feel the spirit.

Last night I had the strangest dream. I dreamed about the Games.
The dreaming came in colors, and there was some naming names.
It all began with Michael Phelps. You may think me a fool.
But Phelps, who was completely dressed, would not jump in the pool.
“I can’t compete here in Beijing; they’re dying in Darfur.”
The crowd within the Water Cube was stunned, and there was more.
“There must be free speech in Beijing,” said Phelps, and then, by God,
The dream went to another place. In dreams that’s not so odd,
And all the Chinese gymnasts stood, and though it was a shock,
They said as one they’d not compete while war raged in Iraq.
As if in solidarity, the members of the team
Playing softball for Australia rose and in this crazy dream,
They told the umpire they’d not ever take the playing field –
And in this firm decision they were certain not to yield -
As long as Russian troops were marching into Georgia’s space,
And athletes from around the world, of every creed and race,
Agreed that there would be no Games, for none of them would play,
Until the soldiers everywhere had put their guns away.
And furthermore, the athletes said, if you would have us run
And swim and jump and hit and throw and kick - all for the fun
Of many millions watching, then you all must now agree
That no one will go hungry and that people will be free.
Now, that might seem a crazy hope, except that in this dream,
The corporations running things began to loudly scream
That they’d invested billions, and that they were damned if they
Would take the loss they’d have to take if athletes didn’t play,
And all the corporate honchos called the heads of all the states,
And said “Knock off the wars and the oppression, boys, the fates
Have changed, and we’ve a bundle on the line, so we need quiet.
And peace there was, throughout the world, because those guys could buy it.
There ends the story, like the dream, although I hope that when
I go to sleep again tonight, I’ll have that dream again.

Upon reevaluation...

It is interesting sometimes when you take things for granted and never really ponder their meaning in your life. You think they bring well defined attributes to the table whether it be joyfulness, anger, frustration, simplicity, or whatever. Sometimes though, your situation changes and things that were once sources of frustration become sources of joy or something else. I think often times we don't stop and evaluate those things in our lives that shape our daily lives in the most meaningful of ways. Mislaid conceptions of things and the idea that something will never change or your thoughts and attitudes towards them would never change I think are all too common in our lives and in mine.

Reevaluating the things in life can provide greater clarity as to how best to proceed forward in life feeling fulfilled and satisfied that you are headed in a positive direction. Upon reevaluating the things in my life, I have achieved a new-found focus as to what the absolute most important things going forward are and have come to recognize that certain things are far more important to me that I had previously realized and some perhaps don't have the same level of importance.

Spending some time looking inward at yourself can sometimes be a very revealing experience...

Rangers Walkoff Wins

The Rangers are starting to make a habit of having walkoff wins and frankly there is nothing more exciting than a such a victory.  The bad thing is I hate to watch my favorite teams lose...so for many of these games I had "given up" on watching the game figuring the odds were pretty that the Rangers would lose, only to be surprised to learn that they pulled one out.

Nothing brings a smile to my face easier than going back and watching these clips...I love how Josh Lewin gets all excited.

(I really wish MLB would allow embedding of their videos)

In Honor of the Indictment of Ted Stevens

On The Daily Show's Indecision 2008 blog, they have a compilation of the Top 5 best Ted Stevens moments...they are all gold...but my favorite is the "phone call" one which didn't qualify as part of the list:

McCain Losing My Respect

I have generally had some level of respect for Sen. McCain. I mean he certainly was the best Republican candidate in 2000, but really he must be either getting old and crazy in the head or simply is a person of low integrity. (Maybe a sign of desperation?) The string of ads that the McCain campaign has become steadily more negative and misleading with every new incarnation. The three ads in question I have posted below:

This ad was the just the first of the series...and really is just blatantly wrong. Obama did not visit the troops in the hospital because he couldn't bring in cameras...this has thoroughly been rebuked by both the media (namely Andrea Mitchell) and more importantly by the McCain camp themselves. I won't even get into the hearing things in the Senate.

I don't really know where to begin with this ad. Is there really something wrong with electing someone who might be popular with people overseas? I think this is one of the most crucial things the next president must bring to the table--an ability to reestablish some credibility overseas with other countries. The notion that Obama's celebrity is along the same lines as Britney Spears and Paris Hilton is laughable. Obama is lauded due to his message and values (among many other positive things). The idea that Obama seeks to increase the amount of foreign oil we acquire is laughable just because his opposes off-shore oil-drilling (which is a bad idea in it of itself). I presume Obama favors moving in the directions that decrease our dependence on fossil-based fuels no matter the source. More drilling is not the answer: solar, wind, hydrogen, etc sources are the answer. And finally, it is really a low move to criticize your opponent on their ability to lead...really you should be shown how you can lead better than him. What indication do we have the McCain will be any better leader than Obama? I think Obama is doing a fine job leading the country into a new direction for the future. I can't really say the same for McCain and his leadership in that area. I have faith in the intelligence of Obama to follow through on his plans and at the very least collaborate with those who can help fulfill the lofty vision he has laid out.

I don't even know what to say about this ad...its simply the most ridiculous idiotic campaign commercial ever seen (well except for John Cornyn's "Big Bad John" Senate ad...which is always good for a laugh). Attacking hope as being something that is not worth believing in or somehow Obama is promising things that he cannot deliver is kinda slimy. The religious references are just in poor taste, and I really don't understand how showing scenes of people adoring Obama is somehow a negative for voters.

Oh and to answer the questions posed in the ad: YES and YES.

Gosh I hope the American public sees the same ridiculousness in these ads I do.
