LIVE BLOG: The Oscars

Since I haven't posted in almost a whole month, I thought I should post something...and what better way to do that than live blog something.  Now, I am not a big movie goer by any stretch of the imagination but I enjoy the festivities that surround award shows.  I usually have one or two movies that I might have seen and really root for to win the big awards, or simply I use the Oscars as a launching point to play catch-up with the best movies of the year.  I watched all the nominees last year in the months following the Oscars...some of them were enjoyable like Atonement...while others were a little perplexing like There Will Be Blood.  So this year I have seen exactly one of the Best Picture Nominees that of Slumdog Millionaire...which is prohibitively my pick for Best Picture...I can't imagine any of the other pictures capturing my attention like it did.
So we are minutes away from getting started with the actual show...time to get cracking:
8:27:  I love Michael Giacchino...composer for LOST and ALIAS....recomposing some classic Oscar themes or something.  That should be cool.  Wasn't paying close enough attention to know exactly what the heck it was about...
8:28:  I should mention that the annoyance factor of Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron, and Miley Cyrus all appearing at the Oscars.  Why does the Disney Channel have to invade everything good in this world?
8:30:  It is time!!
8:32:  Musical number about the nominees...lets do it! (Enough with the exclamation points already :-))
8:34:  Railing against the fact that comic book movies don't get nominations...good point about the disconnect between cost of production and Oscar success.
8:35:  Not a fan of Anne Hathaway...pulled on to stage as Nixon for Frost-Nixon number.  Seems like she can sing though...
8:37: Jackman cracking up during the weird techno number for The Reader...funny
8:38: Overall that opening number was really rather strange...but kinda fun at the same time
8:40:  Why always Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie?  I am so tired of them too...much like the Disney bunch.
8:41:  Nice joke about steriods and Meryl Streep's 15 nominations.  Good one, Hugh.
8:42:  Have to say I really like the setup for this year's stage...looks snazzy
8:44:  If they are going to personally introduce every nominee...this is going to be a very long night
8:45:  Go Amy Adams...love her from her short stay on The Office...we will have to see if she wins Best Supporting Actress.
8:47: Blown-up!! So much for Nate Silver's Oscar predictions using his statistical methods...didn't get the first award of the night...Penelope Cruz wins Best Supporting Actress
8:49:  Ha ha!! I haven't forgotten all of my spanish...I understood Cruz's speech in spanish thanking all the actors from her pais.
8:53: Detailing the screenwriting process...by acting it out...Steve Martin and Tina Fey there...being funny.
8:55: Leading into the Best Original Screenplay...go WALL-E...though Milk will likely win...
8:56: And the winner is...Dustin Lance Black for Milk...I knew it! Darn, I love WALL-E...
8:57: Love the speech preaching gay rights though...you rock Dustin Lance Black.
8:59: Adapted Screenplay...Come On Slumdog Millionaire!!  Lots of good nominees here though...
9:01:  Yay!!! Slumdog Millionaire. :-)  I'm waiting for it to win the Best Picture Award.
9:03:  Nice Dreamworks v. Pixar joke from Jack Black.  Did I mention I like WALL-E?
9:05: Clip reel of the all the animated features of the year...WALL-E is the best :-)
9:06: WALL-E wins for Best Animated Picture...shocking...another win for Pixar.  They always make great movies...WALL-E is their best yet I believe.
9:08: Animated Short Film...haven't seen any of them except Presto!  Which was marvelously funny...but didn't win.
9:15: Daniel Craig...still don't like him as Bond...perhaps I just don't like the scripts for the last few movies though...
9:17: Wow Benjamin Button won something...Best Art Direction...I heard they might get shutout despite their 13 nominations
9:21: One thing about doing a historical-themed movie...always the chance to win the Academy Award for Costume Design...like The Duchess
9:25: No messing around for the acceptance speech for Best Makeup...Benjamin Button again
9:27: Clip montage for Romance in the movies...still seriously what's up with the Disney gang's presence? EVE & WALL-E and Jamal & Latika are the best of the year in my mind.
9:31: Ben Stiller channeling Joaquin Phoenix...nice beard...haha...that is so funny...watch the classic appearance on Letterman to see what he is trying to imitate
9:34: Cinematography award goes to Slumdog Millionaire...it was beautifully shot.
9:42: Clip reel about Comedies of the year...don't think I have seen any of them...actually it is more about making fun of the dramas...the Academy doesn't much care for comedies obviously
9:46: Probably safe to say I have never ever seen any of the best Short Films nominated at any time...this year is no exception.
9:52: Another musical number?...hmm...surprise appearence by Beyonce...not impressed
9:54: Though I do like the Musical medley that they are singing....until of course the Disney gang showed up :-(
10:03: It's Heath Ledger time...Best Supporting Actor category is next... another of those categories in which the nominees are being announced individually
10:08: Absolutely no suprise there...Heath Legder wins Best Supporting Actor...deservedly so...family is accepting the award on his behalf.
10:11: Best Documentary Award...these would all be wonderful to see I imagine...The Inconvenient Truth winning several years ago is still an all-time Oscar highlight of mine
10:16: Those zany documentarians...balancing Oscars on their chins...kinda cool.
10:23: Action 2008...might have actually seen a few of these movies...just a few I guess
10:26: Outstanding Visual effects....might The Dark Knight win for this?...nope...score another for Benjamin Button
10:28: Will Smith can't talk...Boom Goes the Dynamite!
10:29:  There is one for The Dark Knight...Sound Editing...big win...haha
10:31:  It's WALL-E, Slumdog Millionaire, and Dark Knight competing for Sound Mixing...oh the humanity...and its Slumdog Millionaire!! Love it :-)
10:35: And another for Slumdog Millionaire...Film Editing...I feel "it is written" :-)
10:41: Who is Jean Hersholt?  Well...Jerry Lewis won his award...
10:50:  Ooooh....movie music...orchestrated by Michael Giacchino...love it already.  Great version of the WALL-E soundtrack and Slumdog Millionaire too.
10:53:  Hmm...I really like WALL-E's score...but its Slumdog Millionaire again....can't fault that some great music in that movie
10:55: Now this is a toughie...Best Original Song...I love all three of these songs...I'd give it to Down to Earth
10:57: Disappointed Peter Gabriel wouldn't perform his own song...sounds terrible coming from John Legend...sorry
10:59: All right Jai Ho is definitely going to win though...its such a catchy song...the dance at the end of Slumdog doesn't hurt its chances
11:00: Medley of the songs...kinda weird
11:01...I was right...the winner is Jai Ho....cool song
11:03:  Big categories coming up....after the break
11:06: Freida Pinto presenting Best Foreign Language Film...she is so pretty.  Unsurprisingly, I haven't seen any of these.
11:09: The acceptance speeches for Foreign Language Film are always such adventures...
11:11: In Memoriam...sadly I kinda enjoy these things...
11:18: No speech for the Academy president...good move.
11:19:  Time for Danny Boyle's award for Best Director for Slumdog Millionaire...book it!!
11:20:  Love it!! Slumdog wins again. :-)
11:25: I think it is time for Kate Winslet's first Academy Award...Best Actress Award
11:29: Seriously...these personal introductions to the nominees take forever, but there is something enjoyable about them
11:32: Seven minutes later...Kate Winslet finally wins her Oscar...Anne Hathaway seems happy for her...as do all the former winners...that's funny her Dad whistles so she can find him
11:34: The show is running hopeless long...
11:35: Wait...Lena Olin is in The Reader?  I might have see it...
11:36: Now for the seven minute presentation of the Best Actor Award...
11:37: Magnificient Seven music...cool...I think this award is either Sean Penn's or Mickey Rourke's
11:43: Sean Penn wins!!  I might have to see Milk too.
11:45: Love Sean Penn calling out Prop 8...loud cheer from the crowd...and praising Obama.
11:48: Finally time for Best Picture...LET'S GO SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE!!
11:50: Nice montage of the nominees with previous winners of the award...
11:52:  And the winner is...haha!  Slumdog Millionaire :-)
11:53: Everyone to the stage!!
11:55: And that is a wrap...
